Il ne pr\u00e9sente pas d\u2019arc dans sa structure, et cette particularit\u00e9 le rend unique sur le plan du patrimoine au Portugal. Selon la l\u00e9gende, l\u2019\u00e9dification de ce M\u00e9morial de Boavista fut r\u00e9alis\u00e9e en m\u00eame temps que quatre autres m\u00e9moriaux : Ermida (Penafiel), Santo Ant\u00f3nio (Arouca), Alpendorada (Marco de Canaveses), et Lordelo (maintenant disparu, Bai\u00e3o). Habituellement \u00e9rig\u00e9s sur des chemins ou croisement de voies, sa construction comm\u00e9more le passage du cort\u00e8ge fun\u00e8bre de D. Mafalda, fille de D. Sancho I et petite-fille de D.
