At the heart of Montanhas Mágicas®, more than 1,000m above sea level, there is the imposing mountain of S. Macário, a site of geological interest, that is a magnificent vantage point to the morphology and landscape of Gralheira Massif’s eastern region. From here you can admire the mountains of Montemuro, Caramulo and Estrela and the Lafões Valley. It is also at the S. Macário hills where one of the most peculiar Mountain Shrines of the territory, consisting of two hermitages, is set: São Macário de cima and São Macário de baixo, built in memory of a hermit, who, according to the legend, became saint and patron of this mountain. The first is older and surrounded, up to the roof level, by a high wall that protects it from the strong mountain winds; and the second one, which is smaller, is next to a cave, believed to have once housed the legendary hermit. It is in the last weekend of July that the great procession in São Macário’s honor takes place.
