About

The Main Church of Pessegueiro do Vouga, dedicated to S. Martinho Bispo, is located on the northern slope of the Vouga Valley and its origin is believed to go back to medieval times. This church keeps one of the masterpieces of greater value in the city of Sever do Vouga: a gilded silver ostensorium dating from the sixteenth century, a liturgical object for the Eucharist exposition. The border reveals a neoclassical trend, notably through the portal framed by two Doric columns crowned by spiers and finished in curved pediment. The bell tower is unique with pilasters in corners and cornice frieze and cornice. In the inside the high altar stands out with the shrine surrounded by columns and baroque elements and with Mannerist elements of the seventeenth century. Along the church a set of tables representing the Via Sacra - Via Crucis was arranged. It is also worth noticing the existence of a diverse set of altarpieces that show the splendor of the gilded Baroque period.
